When you sign up for Glasgow EPB fiber internet service, you will have equipment installed to bring our high-speed connection into your home. This article explains the difference between the two main types of devices you might have: a GigaSpire or a standard ONT.
What is a Standard ONT?
Think of a standard ONT (Optical Network Terminal) as the modem for your fiber optic service.
- Primary Function: The only job for an ONT is to take the light signal coming from the fiber optic cable and convert it into an electrical signal that your devices can use.
- Setup: It’s a simple device, with a port for the fiber line and an Ethernet port. To get Wi-Fi in your home, you must connect a separate wireless router to the ONT.
- Best For: Those who may already have their own high-performance Wi-Fi router.
In short, if you have a standard ONT, your setup will involve two pieces of equipment: the ONT and your personal Wi-Fi router.
What is a GigaSpire?
Think of the GigaSpire as an all-in-one device that combines the functions of an ONT and a powerful Wi-Fi router into a single unit. The GigaSpire also allows customers to easily manage their network with the Glasgow EPB FiberIQ App. GEPB Fiber customers can add a GigaSpire device for $5/month.
- Primary Function: It handles everything. It converts the fiber optic signal and broadcasts a high-performance Wi-Fi signal throughout your home.
- Setup: It is a single, sleek device that connects directly to the fiber line. It has multiple Ethernet ports for wired connections and provides your home with the latest Wi-Fi technology.
- Best For: Those who want the most convenient and reliable option when it comes to their internet connection. The GigaSpire provides a simple, powerful, and fully supported solution for both your internet connection and your home Wi-Fi network, all in one device.
Key Differences at a Glance
Feature | Standard ONT | GigaSpire |
---|---|---|
Main Role | Converts fiber signal (like a modem) | Converts fiber signal AND acts as a Wi-Fi router |
Wi-Fi | Requires a separate Wi-Fi router | Built-in, high-performance Wi-Fi 6 |
Number of Devices | Two (ONT + your router) | One (All-in-one unit) |
Simplicity | Requires managing two devices | Simple, single-device solution with end-to-end support included |
Which One Do I Have?
The easiest way to tell is by looking at your equipment. If you have a single device that provides your Wi-Fi, you have a GigaSpire. If you have one small box connected to the fiber line, which is then connected by an Ethernet cable to a separate Wi-Fi router, you have a standard ONT.
