Right Tree, Right Place
A beautiful sapling today can become a major utility hazard in ten years. When landscaping, the goal is to choose “Smart Trees”—species that won’t grow to touch or overhang electrical equipment at their mature height.
Understanding the Planting Zones
To protect your home’s power and your trees, follow these distance guidelines:
- Range A (10-25 ft from lines): Stick to low-height plants and small shrubs only. Choose varieties that stay under 12 feet tall at maturity.
- Range B (25-45 ft from lines): This is the “Intermediate Distance.” It’s ideal for small flowering trees (like Dogwoods or Redbuds) that reach a maximum height of 25–35 feet.
- Range C (45+ ft from lines): This is the safe zone for large shade trees and evergreens that grow 40 feet or taller.
The 10-Foot Right-of-Way Alert
Never plant trees or large shrubs within the 10-foot right-of-way directly beneath power lines. This area must remain clear for our crews to access equipment for critical maintenance and emergency repairs. By planting smart, you ensure your trees can grow to their full potential without ever interfering with your community’s connection.
