What is a Rolling Power Outage? Why are we experiencing them?

A rolling power outage is a process where sections of a power grid are shut down for a limited time to relieve demand on the energy supply. These smaller, short outages are measures being taken to avoid larger scale power outages.

How long is each outage and how widespread is each outage?

These outages last for 15 minutes at a time, affecting approximately 450 customers each time.

How can customers help?

Please continue to curtail nonessential electric usage. This includes turning off excess lights, turning off electronics, avoid using appliances, keeping your thermostat at 68 or lower, avoid the use of electric heaters. Cutting down on your usage helps your bill and helps put less strain on the power grid.

What is TVA ELCP Step 50?

The Tennessee Valley Authority has the Emergency Load Curtailment Plan, which is a multi-step process for shedding electric demand in the event of emergencies. Step 50 is the first step that requires Local Power Companies like the Glasgow EPB to implement rolling power outages.

How will these outages affect my electronics?

Electronics and most devices always have the possibility of surging when the power comes back on. Keep all electronics in a surge-protected outlet or unplug electronics during the outage and plug them in after the power is back.
